Having always been a bit of an adrenalin junkie, I could never fathom out why skiing never hit my adventure wish list until my mid 40s.
What eventually provided me with the trigger were my children going on their Prep School annual ski trip and my wife volunteering me to go along as a supervising parent.
It has proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. One week in a one star, very basic hotel with 40 kids, all under the age of 13 in Chatel (French Alps) and by the end of day one I was totally smitten.
So much so that when we returned, my wife had already booked us on a family holiday to Disney in Florida in March/April and by a majority vote I changed the holiday from Florida to Vale in Colorado for two weeks spring skiing. We travelled to the US for a further 3 seasons, before starting to research options in Europe and decided to buy an apartment in the Swiss Alps. The last 5 seasons have provided superb family holidays not to mention the boy's trips!! I have found skiing a fantastic release from business and completely absorbing.
My next challenge is to Heli Ski in British Columbia which looks to be the ultimate alpine experience. I have must added this to my toys and adventures list. If you haven't skied then I would encourage you to have a go. The mountains offer something for everyone and the apres ski is just the best!
Remember life is not a rehearsal!!
